Nic Nemeth confirms he did get a response when he invited Tom Segura to hash out any misconceptions about the pro wrestling business.
Comedian Tom Segura appeared on the May 26 episode of WWE RAW, but the cameo has resulted in major backlash from wrestling fans. Many of them called out the hypocrisy of Segura appearing on WWE TV, considering he insulted them in the past.
During the WWE RAW segment, both Cathy Kelley and Segura acknowledged his past remarks. Segura joked about it, saying, “I’ve said some stupid things in my life,” but didn’t directly mention what “stupid thing” he said. During a 2020 episode of his Your Mom’s House podcast, Segura harshly criticized wrestling and insulted its fan base by calling wrestling “f*cking fake” and then said its fans were “f*cking ret*rds.”

At the time, many people in the pro wrestling community and performers called out Segura for his remarks, including the inappropriate language he used. One of them was Nic Nemeth, who was still working as Dolph Ziggler in WWE at the time. Nemeth reached out to Segura on Twitter and offered a classy response, explaining that pro wrestling is another form of entertainment for everyone. He assumed Segura was doing a comedic bit, but if that was not the case, he was happy to discuss the details of the pro wrestling business with him any time.
During a new interview with Nic and Ryan Nemeth, WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard asked if Nic ever heard from Segura, and how much they feel obligated to correct pro wrestling critics. Nic said Segura immediately replied and tried setting up a place to meet, but noted how COVID restrictions prevented it from happening.

“Oh yeah, instantly. He immediately DM’d me. But I think it was like during COVID or something. Because he goes, ‘Can you get to LA tomorrow and be on my show?’ And I was like, ‘I’d gladly be there, but LA is shut down.’ And he’s like, ‘If you are in LA, we can find a way to where we’re in different rooms …’ But I couldn’t get in anywhere. So, well, I tried for a few weeks immediately. And I think Segura and Christina P are freaking hilarious. And again, so many people — I forgot what I wrote in the tweet. But yeah, it was like, ‘Hey man, I’d be happy to come and because I love comedy and I think you guys are funny. If this is a bit, that’s awesome. I totally understand.
“But it was out of context. So many people were like, ‘You believe this clip?’ And I’m like, ‘What’s the rest of it?’ ‘It’s a comedy show where they make a bunch of jokes. And they say, ‘You’re stupid if you like wrestling. You’re dumb if you like the NFL.’ And then goes five minutes later, saying how wrestling is awesome. So, I don’t know the situation. But it’s… I’m happy to be there and represent and stand up for wrestling at any point of the way.”
Nemeth made it clear that he did not condone the language Segura used, but asked how that was any different than what The Rock recently said to Busted Open co-host Dave LaGreca about wrestling being fake. Nemeth said maybe the reaction was partly due to Segura not being a part of the wrestling business, but he also doesn’t understand the need for anyone to point out that wrestling is predetermined, since most fans know that already.
How often does Nemeth get told wrestling is fake, or feel the need to correct critics?
Nic Nemeth says more people know pro wrestling is fake now than they did in past decades, so those situations happen less now. Nemeth pointed out how people would constantly tell him wrestling was fake when he was still an amateur wrestler and WWE hopeful. He noted how people don’t always remind you that a TV show like Ozark is fake, so still doing it with pro wrestling today is a bit silly.
“It’s hacky and you’re making a joke now in 2025, you’re being stupid. Because, the hard work that goes into it. Let’s not forget the injuries are all real. Everybody is fighting in a business where everybody stands out. Yeah, Ryan’s got a [legitimate] black eye right now. And it’s in a business where everybody’s fighting every step of the way to just become kind of successful and get their name out there. Everyone’s fighting to outdo each other. And everyone stands out somewhere or another and has injuries, gets hurt.
“Some of us work hurt, some of us work injured because you have to. And it’s just all those people making those sacrifices. That’s what the business is. And that’s what you go to see. You want to be entertained by the best in the world. And right now, TNA has all the best rocking and rolling,” Nic Nemeth said.
