WWE recently posted a video asking Superstars what the best advice Triple H ever gave them. Tommaso Ciampa took the chance to share a funny answer with some real history behind it.
In the video (shared to WWE’s YouTube page), answers ranged from heartfelt to professionally sound. However, Ciampa took the opposite route in thanking WWE’s creative head.
He told a story about his 2017 leg injury and subsequent performance at NXT TakeOver: Chicago. There, Ciampa shocked the wrestling world by betraying his best friend Johnny Gargano.
In the aftermath, Ciampa continued to grow, becoming one of the biggest stars in NXT. According to Ciampa, that was actually thanks to Triple H.
Tommaso Ciampa knows it’s all about The Game
“In May 2017 or so, I did a live event and badly injured my ankle. I tore ligaments in it, whatever, and the next night we were supposed to wrestle in a ladder match, Johnny and I versus AOP. It was rough, no sleep, taped it up real good, kinda [got] like a pep talk before I went out there. I asked [Hunter], ‘Do you have any advice or anything?’ Because he’s been in so many situations like this,” Ciampa explained.
He said that Triple H told him it “was all about the game and how you play it.” Ciampa jokingly continued to recite lyrics to Triple H’s theme song, “The Game,” and said the words helped him grow his career.
“So that night, I took that advice and the pain in my ankle and I decided to stab my best friend in the back, which was then a launching point for my NXT career,” Ciampa deadpanned. “So for that, and everything else you’ve done for me, thank you, Triple H.”
