David Otunga recently recalled a moment where he witnessed John Cena absolutely go off backstage.
In a new YouTube video, Otunga recalled a moment that took place during a 2010 WWE Live Event. During the event in Wheeling, West Virginia, the Nexus were set to come out. The group did so, and stormed the main event between Cena and Sheamus. A group of babyfaces then came down and chased off the group, ending the show.
According to Otunga, though, Cena wasn’t pleased. Backstage, he recalled, Cena “stormed through the curtain” and smashed a chair apart. “This stuck out to us, because I remember Heath [Slater] grabbing pieces of the chair…we actually collected pieces of the chair.” He then recalled how Cena began laying into the babyfaces, specifically John Morrison.
Cena was worried the Nexus program was looking weak
“Cena comes back, he slams this chair, and he’s pissed,” Otunga said. “And he starts going off on the babyfaces. But particularly focusing on John Morrison. I’m like ‘whoa,’ I’ve never seen him go off like this at this point, and I’m trying to figure out what Morrison did. But basically, he was yelling at Morrison and the other babyfaces for not taking it serious when they chased us off.”
Otunga went on to note that Morrison brought a show program down to the ring. To Cena, Otunga says, this was viewed as a “mockery,” and made the whole angle look bad, and the heels look weak. Cena went on to say that Morrison was “sabotaging” the angle and putting it at risk, with Otunga noting that people were “scared to breathe.”
Otunga noted that the moment was the angriest he had ever seen Cena as of then. However, it also showed Otunga just how serious Cena took his job. At the time, Cena was at the peak of WWE. According to Otunga, Cena was also allowing himself to be beaten up constantly by the Nexus. As a result, Otunga reflected, Cena wanted the best out of the entire segment.
