Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy reflect on one of WWE’s most real and tough storylines.
Back in 2005, WWE turned a real-life situation into one of its most talked-about storylines. Matt Hardy’s ex-girlfriend Lita had an affair with Edge, now known as Adam Copeland, while Hardy was out with an injury. When the drama became public, WWE used it to fuel an intense on-screen feud between the three.
Although the situation is behind them now, Matt admitted that the entire experience took a heavy emotional toll on him. Speaking on the Ariel Helwani Show, Matt was asked how much of that period was work and how much was based on real emotions.
He said, “Yeah, to a degree, but everybody was back on the same page. I mean, when I was being hired back, we’d all talked, and everybody was on the same page, and we were ready to do business. I mean, there were times where it was probably tough for people.”
When asked if it was tough for him, he replied, “Yeah, I think it was tough for everybody to a degree, you know. I mean, emotionally tackling all that stuff is tough, but yeah, everybody was on the same page, and we were just trying to work together and get it done.”
Jeff Hardy, who wasn’t part of WWE at the time, shared how strange it felt to watch everything unfold from the outside. “It was. It was strange, and it was so real to me, you know? And it was very I mean, I respect the hell out of it, man. How he was able to do that, you know, and get through it the way they did. But yeah, it wasn’t really hard. I don’t think I was watching much wrestling.”
Matt concluded by saying he doesn’t mind talking about that time, even though it was painful. He believes life is too short to hold grudges from the past and views it as a learning experience.
