Charlotte Flair wasn’t allowed to use her last name, “Flair,” until after a WrestleMania match against a major opponent.
WWE superstar Charlotte Flair recently appeared on the Games with Names podcast to revisit her 2018 Survivor Series match with Ronda Rousey. During the conversation, Charlotte was asked about the circumstances behind using “Flair” as her last name in WWE. Upon her debut in NXT, she (Ashley Fliehr) was billed mononymously as Charlotte.
That changed after her WrestleMania 34 match against Asuka.
“I wasn’t allowed to use the name ‘Flair’ or use my last name until after the match with Asuka at WrestleMania 34. I showed up at TV the next night and my boss at the time was like, ‘You can use the last name Flair now.’ I was like, ‘Oh, sweet’ (laughs).”
The Queen humorously noted she felt like she had to “earn” the right to use her family name in the WWE. “I guess I had to earn it,” she said, further stating that she wasn’t allowed to perform her father’s signature chops and “woo” taunt.

Elsewhere in the interview, Charlotte Flair reflected on the triple threat WrestleMania 35 main event. There, Charlotte faced off with Ronda Rousey and Becky Lynch.
“We would have not main evented WrestleMania had it not been for Ronda [Rousey]. Hands down. When she wanted to kind of join what we had already started to build. But her star power, her credibility, her outside influence, the audience that she brought. Kudos to her. I know that, you know, someone said in her book that she couldn’t wrestle. But at the end of the day, it really didn’t matter.”
