WWE legend Terri Runnels revealed she begged Vince McMahon not to make her wrestle.
In a recent interview with Ring The Belle, Terri Runnels recalled how much she enjoyed working as a manager on WWE TV. However, suddenly everything changed when she was told she had to wrestle. Terri hated wrestling women, and says she even begged Vince McMahon not to do it.
“Imagine getting to TVs you love managing. You love everything about what you do. And then all of a sudden, one day they go, “And tonight you’re going to wrestle in front of millions of people on live television what? Not to mention the thousands and thousands and thousands in the arena that are packed here. And we’re going to teach you what you’re going to do, in about 10 minutes from now. Yeah, it was brutal. I begged Vince, “Please, please don’t make me wrestle. Please, please. Yeah, it was pretty clear that I was going to wrestle.”
Runnels clarified that while “hate” might have sounded too harsh, she genuinely didn’t enjoy wrestling women despite doing high-risk moves. She admitted that, unlike many women who spent years training to become wrestlers, she never had that same desire.
“God love you, totally square and totally being honest. So, I didn’t want to. All these women and people want to be wrestlers and train for years and years just to be able to wrestle and I didn’t want to. Loved taking bumps from the guys. You know, Kane picked me up by the neck, tossed me into the front-row chairs. You know, the Dudleys put me through the table great. But I did not want to wrestle. And the bad thing was, I had to memorize it as if it were a ballet. Which, when God forbid they needed to go home early or stretch the match out, they’re like, “Terri’s in the match. We can’t do either.”
When pointed out how rare it was for a woman like Terri Runnels to have singles matches at both WrestleMania and SummerSlam during that time, she said, “How crazy is that, though? I mean, think about how many other women should have been in that situation. You know, wrestling and Terri oh, not my thing.”
