John Cena and Randy Orton will collide for “one last time” in the Backlash 2025 main event. Cena proclaimed himself the “last real” WWE Champion after beating Cody Rhodes for the undisputed title at WrestleMania 41. Orton stepped up as the first challenger with an RKO out of nowhere on the RAW after WrestleMania. The Viper had a bit of parenting advice for his longtime nemesis on SmackDown but the verbal confrontation ended with another RKO out of nowere.
Elsewhere on the card, Becky Lynch will challenge Lyra Valkyria for the WWE Women’s Championship in what might be Lyra’s toughest challenge to date. This feud kicked off after Becky turned against Lyra for failing to retain the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship on the RAW after WrestleMania. Lyra previously beat Becky for the NXT Women’s Championship during her time in developmental.
Pat McAfee will return to in-ring action for the first time since Royal Rumble 2024 when he takes on former World Heavyweight Champion Gunther. McAfee stepped up to Gunther for putting his hands on Michael Cole but got put to sleep by the Ring General on the RAW after WrestleMania. Adam Pearce suspended Gunther for his actions but his SmackDown counterpart Nick Aldis proposed a match at WWE Backlash to settle the feud.
Jacob Fatu defeated LA Knight to win the WWE United States Championship at WrestleMania 41. Knight lost his number one contendership match to Drew McIntyre after the referee witnessed Damian Priest’s assault on McIntyre. Seeing that all three men wanted a shot at Fatu, Nick Aldis turned the original triple threat match into a fatal four way for the United States Championship.
Dominik Mysterio won the Intercontinental Championship in a fatal four-way match also featuring Bron Breakker, Penta and Finn Balor at WrestleMania 41 Night 2. Dom would retain his title due to a run-in by JD McDonagh the following night on RAW. The celebration didn’t last long as RAW GM Pearce booked Dominik to defend his title against Penta at Backlash 2025.
