Booker T still feels like his WrestleMania 19 match against Triple H was a success, whether he got the win or not.
WWE WrestleMania 19 saw Booker T challenge Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship. Triple H walked away with the win that night, a decision that still doesn’t sit well with some fans. The storyline was also called out for the racial connotations, including Triple H telling Booker that “people like you” don’t deserve to be World Champion.
The storyline has been criticized for many years, but Booker T is one person who is not bothered by it. He has said in the past that he “didn’t lose sleep” over it and was just doing his job. More recently, Booker appeared on-stage at WWE World and said that he still considers WrestleMania 19 to be a personal victory because of what he overcame in life.
“You know what? A lot of — so many people, a lot of office guys told me, ‘Man, you should have won that night.’ You know what I mean? And with the angle, yeah, perhaps I should have won that night,” Booker T explained. “But honestly, I never really lost any sleep over it or anything like that. I always looked at wrestling a certain way. I always looked at it as a performance.”
Booker T didn’t win a match, but he still won
Booker joked about being ok with taking a loss as long as he got a check afterwards. However, he got serious again and pointed out how he was a dropout and went to prison, but turned his life around and went to WrestleMania. That, he says, is a big win for him.
“[I’d left] everything in the ring that night. I went out and performed my ass off. I didn’t win. But I still won. Because I’m a kid, I’m a kid from South Park, Texas, who dropped out of school in the 10th grade, who went to prison. All right. Got locked up. Came out, and found myself at the main event of WrestleMania. All right. That’s a win. That’s a win. Any way you look at it. Any way you look at it, that’s a win,” Booker T said.
