The future of Alberto Del Rio in WWE remains a hot topic of discussion.
Conflicting reports have emerged about Alberto Del Rio’s contract status as it relates to WWE’s acquisition of AAA. Superluchas’ Ernesto Ocampo and The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer have indicated that Del Rio, the current AAA Mega Champion, has already inked a new contract with WWE. Meanwhile, Cory Hays of Bodyslam.net reported that Del Rio remained signed to a AAA deal, with his future not set in stone until the finalization of the WWE-AAA sale, expected to take place at the end of the third quarter financial period.
Despite contrasting contract reports, both Hays and Meltzer report that Del Rio and most of the AAA talents are not expected to be on WWE television, but rather in Mexico under the AAA banner, following the purchase completion.
“These signings are for the Mexican market, it’s not like Alberto is going to show up on Raw or SmackDown. Vikingo may, or at least on NXT, I would expect,” Meltzer said on Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t to WrestleTalk for the transcription). “That’s the basis, this is not an extension of their AAA contracts, this is new, these are new deals and more people are expected to sign new deals.”
In the case of Del Rio, Meltzer added that WWE is more concerned about the licensing and marketing surrounding him. Del Rio previously worked in WWE from 2009 until 2014 before returning in 2015 for another year.
Along with WWE’s acquisition of AAA will come the NXT Worlds Collide event, where talents from both AAA and the WWE NXT brand will wrestle under the roof of the Kia Forum on June 7. WWE nor AAA have confirmed talents for the show.
