WWE Undisputed Champion John Cena explains why he apologized to The Rock’s mother after WrestleMania 28.
In 2012, John Cena and The Rock had a very intense rivalry that went beyond what fans saw on screen. Their issues became real backstage, especially after Cena criticized The Rock for using notes written on his wrist during a promo. Even though Cena lost their WWE title match at WrestleMania 28, he handled the situation with respect and spoke to The Rock after the show.
During an interview with Vanity Fair, Cena looked back on the feud and admitted he made mistakes. He said he got too personal while promoting the match and tried to stir up controversy by spreading rumors.
“Dwayne had always been cordial to me and always helped me out, and I did something foolish and started to go into business for myself and drum up rumors about things I knew nothing about, which were great for this [rivalry]. But it’s very much a professional faux pas.”
While things certainly got heated between the two, however Cena made it clear that he wasn’t trying to replace anyone. He just wanted to help make the storyline better.

“A few days before this [match at WrestleMania 28] we began to put this puzzle together, and I think that’s when Dwayne finally realized that I’m not in it to take anyone’s spot. I’m just trying to do good business.”
The 17-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion took responsibility for his actions and personally apologized to The Rock and his mother.
“But after the show is over, the very first thing I do is, apologize to Dwayne’s mother because she was the first person I saw. And then went right into Dwayne’s locker room and apologized to him. And that was the first moment of me being like, ‘Man, this was great. If we had worked together, I don’t know how great it could’ve been. Like it could’ve been so much better.’ He was empathetic, he was gracious.” [H/T: ewrestlingnews]
