Steve Blackman isn’t naive to the thought of getting back inside the squared circle.
In November 2024, Steve Blackman made a rare appearance on WWE Vault’s YouTube channel to present his iconic SummerSlam 2000 match against Shane McMahon. The bout gets its sort-of-cult-like reputation from the fall Shane took during the closing moments.
Blackman recently appeared on INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet to reminisce about his pro wrestling days. At one point in the interview, Blackman addressed the possibility of coming out of retirement, admitting the thought has crossed his mind.
“Sometimes I feel good, especially after my second neck operation,” he said. “I don’t have those headaches all day, every day, where I sit there and just do this, because I had four bone spurs digging in nerves in my neck. So every time I’d land or move, it was like pencil points digging in. So once I had those removed, [I used to] sit there all day just trying to find a spot where I could sit in where it wasn’t jagging me. So now that that’s been fixed, some days I feel good. I’m like, Man, I could go out there and do a couple matches. It crosses my mind.”
Steve Blackman on possibly making a WWE return
Blackman previously thought he put wrestling behind him, largely because he needed a few neck operations. He had two procedures done that cut his headaches down a great deal, and now he can function without pain all day. If he is in pain, he says he can work through it. Despite feeling better these days, he hasn’t discussed his comeback aspirations with anyone, including WWE.
“I haven’t even really discussed anything with anyone,” Blackman said. “Don’t get me wrong. I mean, there’s times where I thought, oh man, it’d be fun to go back there and do a hardcore match or something like that, and just flow with it, and just to do it again. You know, it’s been 20 years, but I don’t really bring it up. I haven’t talked to anybody about it.”
Blackman last competed inside a WWE ring in 2007. He took part in a battle royal on RAW’s 15th anniversary special. “The Lethal Weapon” hasn’t competed inside the squared circle since that night in Connecticut.
